Q.WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAID JOB?
Darkroom technician at the Sunday Times Newspaper in Perth.
Q.TALK US THROUGH YOUR FAVORITE NIKON GEAR… WHAT DO YOU USE AT THE MOMENT?
In the old days of film I used to carry several of the same model body for continuity, now with Digital I have several different Body models that I use for different purposes similar to how we used a combination of Lenses and Film Stock. I mainly shoot action films mostly in very low light so shutter speed is my governing factor, I love the look I get from shooting Ultra fast primes at f/1.8 and f/2 so it’s not an impediment on my style, it actually is my style but It also means it is imperative I shoot the best Glass Nikon manufacture. The D3 is my work horse, my D300 I shoot when I need DX crop and DX lenses like the 18-200 vr, my D700 is my lightweight kit, underwater body and blimp body and my D90 is my constant companion and emergency backup should any of my gear go missing during shipping. In addition to a smorgasbord of fast primes I also carry a 400 2.8 vr, 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 vr 2.8. My favourite lens Nikon has ever made is my 85 1.4, I pull her out of my case any opportunity I get. The only lens not in my kit that I would love to own is the 200 f2.

When I started as a cadet photographer at the Sunday Times in Perth it was part of our training that we had to do an external photography course for one day a week. I was kicked out just after the introduction when the teacher told me there was no room for a photographer like me in his class after telling him I wanted to be a war photographer when asked what style of photography I wished to pursue.
I always seemed to be in trouble and I was so scared when I had to go back to the newspaper and tell my boss. I can still see the proud look on his face when I told him the reason I was told not to return! 2 weeks later I won the Australian Cadet Photographer of the year award. Now I am a Nikon Ambassador, pretty ironic really!
Q.WHO IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON YOU HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED?
I don’t want to get into trouble elevating one of my friends over the other.

Q. BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER GIVEN
Never show an emotion unbecoming to one’s self.
Q.IF YOU COULD PHOTOGRAPH ANYONE OR ANYTHING, LIVING OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?
Earth from the Moon.
Q.WHERE DO YOU SEE THE PHOTOGRAPHY INDUSTRY IS HEADING?
I think low light capabilities will remain the focus of R&D in the foreseeable future. The D3x hopefully will be the end of the Megapixel race for the time being while it catches up to the D3 in her areas of expertise. D-Movie made more user friendly in line with current still photography will be a priority too.

Q.WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OF?
Fast prime lenses and Focus Zones that extend further to the outer frame.
Q.WHAT DO YOU SEE AS OPPORTUNITIES AS AN AMBASSADOR?
Being bestowed this great honour gives me the ability to spend time with the guy on the street who has photography purely for fun. The enthusiasts love for all things photography is made from pure passion and I envy that.
Q.WHO ARE YOUR THREE FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHERS AND WHY?
Eugene W Smith, because he put himself on the line to tell the truth! Don McCullen, his combat photography made me want to live and is the reason why I am a photographer today.
Ansell Adams his framing and zone theory were astounding he was literally the first Photoshop program.
Q.WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I have never contemplated not being a photographer, I left school at 16 to become a photographer and have only ever shot Nikon. My first work camera was a Nikkormat FT2 with the light meter battery removed by my boss so I could learn to see light.
